The Original Goji Berry

Description: These whole dried Tibetan Goji Berries are
burnt-redin color and about the size of a raisin. They're
vaguely sweet, but also a bit tart.  Imagine a taste that is
 somewhere between
 a cherry, a cranberry and a raisin.

These Goji Berries are gathered wild in Tibet, then shade-dried.
They are not fumigated, processed or artificially sweetened in
any way. They keep well at a cool room temp. It is said in
Tibet that "eating Goji berries in the morning will make you
happy the entire day -- withsuch a practice, eventually you
can't stop smiling."

Uses:

Superlative snack food just as they are! Goji Berries mix
nicely with just about everything. They are a great addition to
a Trail Mix. Goji Berries blend up nicely in a smoothie or a
shake.

Nutrition:

Goji Berries are legendary  for their nutritional value.
They are "nutrient-dense", which means that they contain an
amazing variety of nutrients. In fact, Goji Berries are often
quoted as "the most nutrient-dense food on the planet."
Goji Berries contain 18 kinds of amino acids (more than
bee pollen), all 8 essential amino acids, up
to 21 trace minerals and more carotenoids, (more beta
carotene than carrots) than any other food. They contain
500 times the amount of vitamin C, by weight, than oranges
making them second only to camu camu berries as the richest
vitamin C source on earth. Goji berries also contain vitamins
B1, B2, B6, and Vitamin E. They also contain abundant polysaccharides, which strengthen the immune
system and slow the aging process. Thus, Gogi Berries
are known as the "anti-aging berry."

Goji Berries contain the following complex compounds:

Betaine, which is used by the liver to produce choline,
a compound that calms nervousness, enhances memory,
promotes muscle growth, and protects against fatty liver disease.

Physalin, which is active against all major types of leukemia.
It has also been used as a treatment for hepatitis B.

Solavetivone, a powerful anti-fungal and anti-bacterial compound.

Beta-Sitoserol, an anti-inflammatory agent. It has been used
to treat sexual impotence and prostate enlargement. It also
lowers cholesterol.

Cyperone, a sesquiterpene that benefits the heart and
blood pressure. It has also been used in the treatment of
cervical cancer.

Lycium berries are dried fruits with a distinctive, slightly
sweet flavor and contain vitamins, minerals, beta carotene,
polysaccharides and amino acids. They are excellent in
desserts, (rehydrate and bake into cookies, muffins or
scones) and add to the taste and appearance of grain dishes.

For thousands of years people in Asia have used lycium
fruit and licorice to help maintain good health. Lyciun
helps improve vision and prevent headaches and dizziness
caused by liver and kidney deficiencies.

Modern science does indeed confirm that the berries
exert a beneficial effect on the liver, protecting it from
damaging toxins. The root stimulates the involuntary
nervous system that governs the internal organs. The
root also relaxes the wall of the arteries, allowing them to
expand and thus lowering blood pressure. Lycium has also
been shown effective in mild forms of diabetes.

Seventy nine advanced cancer patients in a clinical trial
were treated with LAK/IL-2 combining with Lycium
polysaccharides (LBP). Initial results of the treatment
from 75 evaluable patients indicated that objective
regression of cancer was acheived (Article in Chinese)
Cao 1994.

Results indicate treatment with an herbal decoction (Viscuum
coloratum, Psoralea corylifolia, Eucommia ulmoides,
Tibetian Lycium berry. Tussilago farfara, Artemisia capillaris,
and Pogosteom cablin) helped reverse airway obstruction of asthmatics. (Article in Chinese) FU 1989.

The hepatotoxicant, CC14, routinely decreased levels of total
and reduced glutathione. The levels of these
compounds were significantly maintained at the levels of
the control cultures following treatment with
Lycium  cerebroside
. (Kim 1999)

Goji Berry......clean inside and out!

You will find that the Goji berries are exceptionally
clean. The berries are washed in industrial stainless
steel rotating drum cleaners equipped with water jets. The
water used is from our underground well, which is naturally
of drinking water quality. The initial wash helps remove
dirt and dust, thereby lowering bacteria and
any heavy metal levels right from the beginning.

The Goji berries are also subject to a very careful
grading and sorting system. We make sure there is
no extraneous matter, soil, powder, pebbles or dust in
the herbs you buy. We ship most of our herbs in
vacuum packed bags, further protecting them from
damage, insects, dust and dirt during the shipping process.

We carefully monitor Goji berries for any impurities
at our in-hose lab where we test the microbial levels
and sulfur residues. Outside labs test for DDT and
Hexachlorabenzene, two non-permitted pesticides, as
well as lead, arsenic, mercury, and cadmium heavy
metal levels. They have year after year tested pure
and free of contaminates.

Proper climate, soil and herb selection are crucial
to the medicinal nature of herbs. Most herbs indigenous
to one region cannot be properly grown in another. We
select the wild Goji berries grown only in their
indigenous soils to guarantee quality and correct species.
Our highly trained staff travel throughout Mongolia and
Tibet to inspect the wild growing regions to check
the Goji vines, soil and water sources while the
berries are growing on vine and during harvest. We
work with harvesters and grower facilitators, educating
them about wildcrafting methods, to minimize the
endangerment of plant species, the hazards of sulfur
dioxide processing, and of quality control in
general. The Goji berries are shipped straight from
the wildcrafters to our GMP certified processing site
for increased freshness and potency.

Laboratory Testing

Once the berries arrive, sulfur testing, organoleptic
inspection, and frequently microscopic inspection is
used to ensure and verify the Goji berries are all the
correct species and not commonly used substitutes as
the Chinese Lycium Wolfberry. Over fifty herb reference
texts and an in-house lab, together with the experience
of five herb masters, are on site to make sure that our
Goji berries have the potency and safety you expect.

The internationally GMP certified factories where the
berries are processed has an in-house lab where
extensive quality control analyses is performed. All raw
materials are identified and basic tests are performed
before passing for further inspection. chemical analyses
including TLC (thin layer chromatography) and HPLC
(high performance liquid chromatography) are also
used to confirm identification, ensure potency and to
test for active constituents.

Test for moisture content. dissolution, heavy metals
(lead, arsenic, mercury, cadmium) and microbial
content are preformed on every batch of every harvest.
Restrictions on heavy metal and microbial
contaminants are stringent and in line with
international requirements. Following extensive in-house
testing, heavy metal testing is conducted again at
third party labs to confirm results and to ensure that
our standards of purity and safety are met. More
sophisticated analyses, such as Aristolochic testing and
Chloramphenicol testing, are conducted at outside
certified labs. When the products arrive in the U.S. they
are subject to an additional review by the FDA
ensuring that the products you receive meet every standard.
